. Marburg virus disease formerly known as Marburg haemorrhagic fever was first identified in 1967 following two large outbreaks that simultaneously occurred in Marburg and Frankfurt in Germany. Marburg virus MARV causes Marburg virus disease in humans and primates a form of viral hemorrhagic fever. Marburg virus disease is a zoonotic disease which means it can pass from animals to humans.

The World Health Organization has declared an outbreak of the Marburg virus after Ghanas Ministry of Health confirmed two cases of the disease on Sunday. Marburg is a highly infectious viral hemorrhagic fever in the same family as Ebola. Marburg virus disease causes people to quickly develop severe illness and fever which could lead to shock or death.
